Washington Square has a history that dates to the early nineteenth century. Various monuments in the park honor war veterans, including a Civil War monument that pays tribute to "soldiers and sailors of the County of Oswego who nobly defended the union 1861-1865." Also, in the center of the park is a monument erected by the American Gold Star Mothers of Oswego County, dedicated to those who died in WWII.

Today, children can enjoy Washington Square's colorful playground, a basketball court, and a huge play area. Parents can relax on a bench under any of the numerous trees, while keeping close watch over their children. With plenty of sun and shade, Washington Square is a great place to have a picnic or to play a game.
