Washington Square has a history that dates to the early nineteenth century.
Various monuments in the park honor war veterans, including a Civil War monument
that pays tribute to "soldiers and sailors of the County of Oswego who nobly defended
the union 1861-1865." Also, in the center of the park is a monument erected by
the American Gold Star Mothers of Oswego County, dedicated to those who died in
WWII.
